Get the right treatment when you need it.
NHS services are very busy at the moment. It’s important to come forward with any health concerns but you can help ease the pressure by choosing the right service.
Your pharmacy can advise you on minor illness without the need of an appointment. Please speak to a pharmacist first.
We kindly ask that all patients, where possible, try to stick to one problem per consultation. This request is made with your clinical safety in mind.
We understand that securing an appointment can sometimes be challenging, and that some patients may choose to bring a list of concerns to discuss all at once. We also recognise that clinicians may occasionally run late. However, presenting multiple problems in a single 10-minute consultation increases the chance of something being overlooked or rushed, particularly when other patients are waiting.
To give some context:
1 minute – settling into the consultation
3 minutes – discussing your main concern
3–4 minutes – carrying out an examination
2 minutes – explaining the findings and next steps
This already fills the entire 10-minute slot and leaves very little room for note writing, referrals, or seeking second opinions from colleagues.
When several issues are presented in one visit, there is a real risk of error. One of the most important roles of primary care is to detect serious illness early. Multiple concerns in one appointment can make it much harder to focus and spot that one issue which may be critical — it becomes like looking for a needle in a haystack.
At both OM Medical Centre and Shiva Medical Centre, we are committed to providing safe, effective, and high-quality care. To continue doing so, we kindly ask that you use GP appointments thoughtfully and understand if your doctor or ANP asks you to book a follow-up appointment for additional concerns.
Please don’t be offended — this approach is designed to protect your health and ensure that every issue you raise receives the attention it deserves.
If you feel that a double appointment is necessary, please speak to our reception team or your GP in advance, and we will do our best to accommodate where possible.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,
OM Medical Centre & Shiva Medical Centre
How To Book
eConsult enables NHS based GP practices to offer online consultations to their patients.
eConsult is the most widely used digital triage tool in NHS primary care, built by NHS GPs for NHS patients, designed to enhance patient access, improve practice efficiencies and signpost patients to the right place at the right time for their care.
Dear Patients of OM Medical Centre and Shiva Medical Centre,
To help us provide you with the best care possible, we kindly ask that you take a moment to read the following before attending your appointment:
Mobile Phones: Please switch off your phone or avoid texting during your consultation to help us stay focused on your care.
Be Prepared for an Examination: You may be examined during your visit, so please wear clothes that are easy to remove. For example, if you’re coming in for tummy pain, avoid tight-fitting garments like corsets.
Outerwear: Please remove your outer coat before entering the consultation room. If you’re bringing children, kindly remove their outer layers beforehand as well. Where possible, try to re-dress children after the appointment once you’re back in the waiting room.
Follow-Up Appointments: If your doctor asks you to return for a follow-up, please make sure to do so. Not being called back does not always mean your tests were normal — your doctor may be expecting you to come back as previously discussed.
Hospital Appointments: If you’re looking to speed up a hospital appointment, please first contact the hospital directly or speak to our practice secretary.
Multiple Issues: If you have several things to discuss with your GP, please start with the most important one first. There may not be enough time to cover everything in one session, and a further appointment might be needed.
Medical Records & Notes: Some of our doctors aren’t the fastest typists — please understand that part of your appointment time may be used to accurately update your medical records.
One Patient Per Appointment: Each appointment is for the person whose name is booked in. If someone else in your family needs to be seen, please arrange a separate appointment for them.
Be Open from the Start: If something is really worrying you, please let your doctor know at the beginning of the consultation. This helps us help you more effectively.
Whilst we encourage our patients to come to the surgery, where we have the proper equipment and facilities available, we do appreciate this is not always possible.
In this respect, if you do need a home visit, you can help us by calling reception before 10.30am.
You may only request a home visit if you are housebound or are too ill to visit the practice. Your GP will only visit you at home if they think that your medical condition requires it and will also decide how urgently a visit is needed. Please bear this in mind and be prepared to provide suitable details to enable the doctor to schedule house calls.
You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.
All patients are entitled to have a chaperone present for any consultation or examination.
Please request this at the time of booking, or speak to your GP or Nurse.
Can’t Make Your Appointment? Please Let Us Know
At OM Medical Centre and Shiva Medical Centre, we understand that life can get busy and things can slip your mind, including GP appointments. However, missed appointments take away valuable time that could be given to someone else who needs it.
If you no longer need your appointment or can’t attend, please cancel it as soon as possible.
Call Us to Cancel:
OM Medical Centre: 01795 580402
Shiva Medical Centre: 01795 876015
Please try to give at least 30 minutes’ notice. This helps us offer the slot to another patient in need.
Prefer to cancel online?
You can cancel your appointment quickly and easily using Patient Access or The NHS App (if you’re registered for online services).
On average, around 230 appointments are missed every month across our practices. That’s a lot of lost time that could have been used to help others.
Please be aware:
Appointments cancelled with less than 30 minutes’ notice may be recorded as a Did Not Attend (DNA).
Repeated missed appointments without notice may result in further action, as this represents a significant waste of NHS resources.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us serve all our patients better.
